Lathe-cut Records

Yes, that’s me

Messy hair and all, making records in the Consonant Collective studio. My partner Joe and I have been embossing records for a few years now, using three “medium-fi” lathes: a Presto 6DSP, a Presto 6N, and a Rek-O-Kut Imperial II. These machines are between 70 and 90 years old, and they create records one at a time, using styli made of sapphire, tungsten, and other hard materials to emboss grooves into the discs. Our records have around 85% fidelity of a pressed record—the music comes through clear and dynamic, but they maintain a warm, vintage sound.

You can hire us to cut your record or put on a live cutting event, for which everyone who attends gets whatever audio they provide cut onto a 7-inch record. We’ve done these events at Philadelphia’s Parkway Central Library, the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Swarthmore College, and elsewhere. We do private parties too!

Check out the Consonant Collective website for more information on what we do and how to hire us.
